In this month of November we tend to be divided. We are still longing for summer and we often are dreading the coming winter months. Regardless of the weather, November can be a bleak time for us, with Holidays coming up and Halloween over, we can feel rudderless and without purpose.
Letting things go is difficult for us humans. Our brains are set up to retain negative experiences and ponder them ad nauseum. We dwell on things and they hurt us over and over again. Our friends tell us; “let it go” but that is often easier said than done.
Why do we hold onto these things so long? I think it is because of survival. The human brain is set up to retain these hurtful memories so as to avoid them in the future, If a particular type of cave housed a saber-toothed tiger that attacked us, well we would surely remember what kind of cave that was wouldn’t we?
Sadly some of us may remember it but return again and again and risk ourselves in the same situations over and over. Perhaps the addiction to the adrenaline, the excitement and the feeling of pride we get for escaping dangerous situations is stronger than fear?
That being said, here are some suggestions on how to really let go for good and move on with your life. It’s November, time to let go and prepare for the next joyful chapter in your life…and also dig out your holiday decorations. And if you are in the colder climates, get a new hat! There’s nothing like a warm new hat to lift your spirits and donate the old one too. If it’s in good shape, a charitable donations box and if it’s not so wearable, an animal sanctuary uses warm hats to help tiny orphaned critters get back on their feet or wings as it were!
