The kiss on your list
“but if they insist, on knowing my bliss
I’ll tell them this;
If they wanna now what the reason is,
I only smile when I lie, then I tell them why;
Beause your kiss is on my list, of the best things in life”
Hall and Oates
Ever wonder what the origin of kissing is? I mean what on earth would posses us to press our lips together in a passionate, or friendly or casual or deeply romantic way? Seems kinda weird when you think of it. Yet there is an origin which makes a lot of sense, though you might think it’s a bit icky in light of our current cutlery affection but kissing started with the exchange of food from mother to child. After weaning off milk in mammals, we chew up and pass food to the babes. Of course now we have cutlery and then we had blenders and food processors so the food passing stopped and the warm, affectionate, comforting aspect remained and blossomed into something beyond a mother’s care and into the realm of the romantic. Almost every animal use mouths or beaks to share food and affection but believe it or not, not every human culture kisses! In fact in the human cultures where they still feed babies from mouth, they don’t practice kissing for affection. I get that, i mean who knows if he’s reachng in for romance or romaine?
There is a science to kissing too. I don’t know about you but have you ever kissed someone and felt something like an electric shock? But this one is warm and tingly and utterly pleasurable! Or what about when you kiss someone and your body kind of pulls back and it feels like kissing your brother or sister? Well they may not be your sibling but your brain is sensing pheromones which are either compatible or not with your DNA. So if it feels like your relative, they kinda might be. at least enough so that your brain is telling you; not a viable partner for mating, or even dating!
So enjoy the fact that you live in a culture that loves to kiss! Next time you are searching local chatrooms for local singles to date or mate , mention that you are conducting a scientific experiment on kissing and watch the sparks fly!
