I Met Someone on Vacation, But There’s a Language Barrier

Danielle from Toronto asks…Lava365 Ask the Expert

I met someone who just moved to the city when I was at a local cafe. The problem is that he speaks primarily Spanish and only broken English. I’m not sure if there’s a future together if we don’t both speak English. What do you think?

Dear Holly,

The fantasy of meeting an attractive, exotic man…oh la la!  This sounds like a romantic adventure for sure. What have you got to lose? Nothing! You’ll get to practice learning a new language with a handsome teacher and make a new friend. I am a big believer that any obstacle can be overcome if two people are committed to the challenge. If the spark is real, it will grow over time.

I’d suggest typing out your thoughts about your goals, dreams and values. Then add some important questions you’d like to ask him about his life, work, family, hobbies, passions, sex and his goals. Have him do the same. Take your documents and go online and do a translation from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.

Ask friends to help you communicate your thoughts to each other and see if your lifestyles are a fit. Check out where he lives, meet his friends, and maybe even meet his family to determine if he is someone you can grow with. Relax, let go of all expectations, live in the moment and time will reveal your next steps.

I had a client who met a woman from the Ukraine who spoke very little English. They used this technique to correspond. Yes, it took patience and time. But, he eventually married her and adopted her son. They have been happily hitched now for over 5 years and they both speak two languages. Anything is possible and, who knows, this could be your love story someday!
