I Don’t Want to be Lied to Online. How do I Avoid That?

TJ from Markham asks…Lava365 Ask the Expert

I’m looking for a good, loving relationship. There are so many scammers online and how do you figure out if they’re real? I’ve been lied to a lot.

There are a few ways to quickly identify the traits of a possible online scammer. The research we’ve discovered about online profile scammers is they typically only use one profile photo. The photo may seem a little “too good to be true.”

They will come up with an excuse as to why they only have one photo. Anyone who messages you who lives on another country is also a cause to raise an eyebrow. Most people wanting to start off a serious long-term relationship will filter their search geographically within a 50 mile radius, not 5000.

How many serious daters message someone in another country? Another key tell is when they want to quickly move the message off the dating site and request you start an email conversation using a personal yahoo account. These are all facts revealed from those who have been victims of online romance scams or “catfished.”

If you cannot communicate with this person by phone, or they continue to make up excuses as to why they can’t meet you; I would move on and report this member to the dating site.
