It’s summer in the city and that means that on weekends, everyone is trying to get the hell out of dodge. For a new couple, planning the first weekend away can be as stressful as it is exciting. So, we’ve compiled a list of getaway ideas to make things a little easier.
1. Be a tourist in your own city
That’s right, sometimes to get some time away from it all, you don’t actually have to go anywhere. When was the last time you were up early enough on Saturday to hit the St Lawrence market? Have you been to the new aquarium? Toronto attracts people from all over the world and boasts a ton of things to do on any given day – so why not take advantage of home ground as a new couple? Discover the Kiraj Hammam Spa at the Shangri-La Hotel and then sit down for dinner at Momofuko. Whatever you decide to do be sure to challenge yourselves by leaving your phones at home and really disconnecting from everyday life. It will help you enjoy the city, and each other from a new perspective.
2. Prince Edward County
Quieter than Niagara but just as beautiful, Prince Edward County is becoming more and more a go-to spot for the wine-lovers weekend away. Spend the afternoon at Norman Hardie Winery for the famed pizza lunch and wine tasting then head over to a quaint B&B. Check out The Waring House or the Manse Boutique Inn for a great selection of accommodation packages as well as their cooking classes from the in-house Cookery School and picnic baskets, stocked for enjoying a day of scenery, respectively.
3. Niagara on the Lake
A weekend getaway classic, the Niagara wine region never disappoints. Book a B&B and take advantage of their shuttles back and forth to wineries for tours and tastings. Seek out the understated Five Rows Craft Wine Vineyard, Stratus Vineyard, or heavy-hitter Peller Estates, just to name a few. Beautiful in any season, niagarawinefestival.com will keep you informed of all upcoming events. While you’re visiting, be sure to stop by Niagara Falls on your way home to play tourist and visit the strip to remind yourself of the majestic beauty of the falls.
4. Muskoka/Cottage Country
Do you or your significant other own a cottage? If so, perfect! Summer’s not over yet, pack up the car and get out of town for some food, sun, and each other’s company. Don’t have a readily available chalet? Don’t fret – there are a ton of options available from cottage rentals, to camping in Algonquin park, to getting your golf & spa on at Deerhurst Resort. Got yourself a cloudy day? Head to Muskoka Brewery Wednesday through Saturday for lunch and a tour.
